Lego Birthday Cake

It didn't seem that long ago when I made the 1st-birthday cake for James.  So I couldn't believe it when James' mom Sally contacted me last month to make his 2nd-birthday cake.  How time flies!

The toy theme from last year continues and this time, it's Legos!  The cake, chocolate with green tea buttercream, was made in the shape of a Lego block.   James' name is shown in Lego font in the front, along with a Lego figure with a 2 on his shirt standing on Lego blocks that read 'Happy Birthday'.

It is always rewarding and extremely encouraging to know that clients like the cake I make for them. So I really appreciated the email Sally sent me afterwards to let me know how much they liked James' cake and that they want to book me for James' birthday cake next year =)  It put a huge smile on my face and I would love to continue the tradition and have more cakes to come for James!

Toy Chest for Baby Shower

Most people have an idea of the cake they want when they place an order.  Some details might be different than the original concept as we fine-tune the design, but generally the final product is a version of the client's vision.  So when I was given free reins and complete creative control for a baby shower cake, I was ecstatic and my mind went into overdrive!  What to do...the possibilities are endless!  I wanted to do something a little less traditional and in the end, I settled on a toy chest cake.

The idea is to have a toy chest spilling out with toys for the arriving baby girl.  It would sit on a cake board covered in fondant made to look like a wood floor . The toy chest panels are made from modeling chocolate and it was the first time I worked with it.  It created beautiful straight flat panels that are also very yummy. Then it was time to fill up the chest with some cute and fun toys!

I had so much fun with this cake.  I'm happy to report that the mom and dad-to-be loved it as well!  I was told that the soon-to-arrive baby liked the chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream also...guess it was kicking while mom ate =)  Congrats Ren and Janet as you await the arrival of your little girl!

Leafs vs. Canucks!

What happens when a Leafs fan marries a Canucks fan? A hockey-themed wedding!  I had met with a couple a few months ago who wanted a hockey-themed wedding cake. The cake toppers was to be the couple dressed in hockey jerseys - with their last names and the numbers '8' and '18' on the back to reflect their wedding date (August 18th). I was excited about the concept and couldn't wait to get started on it!

I wanted the toppers to be as true to the bride and groom as possible so I did my best to capture all the details.  The bride had her hair in a loose bun style with wavy strands of bangs on each side of her head, wore an A-line dress, silver earrings with large crystals that dangle, a veil that ends midway between her knees and ankles and of course some bling on her hand =)  The groom wore a black tux with black shoes.

In addition to the cake toppers, there were some hockey accent pieces on the different tiers of the cake.

Hockey stick and puck with the couple's initials
Hockey skate

The cake was part of the hockey decor arranged by wedding planner extraordinaire Berlyn Lai at BLoved Events.  Even though hockey season hasn't quite started yet, it kind of makes you want to shout 'Go Leafs (and Canucks too) Go' once you stepped into the venue =)

Penguin Cake Toppers

It's been a busy summer and I'm long behind on my updates =P I finally have a little time to catch up on my posts this long weekend!

My brother-in-law got married a month ago and he had asked me to make his wedding cake toppers for him.  Kudos to the bride, now my sister-in-law, for making her own wedding cake!   With all the things to get ready for before the wedding, I don't know how she managed to fit making a 3-tier cake in there!   But baking she did and her cake turned out beautifully!

The couple share a love for penguins...they love them so much they want penguins to be part of their wedding!  My brother-in-law has a stuffed penguin that he's kept since he was a kid and he wanted it featured as his wedding cake topper:

Congratulations to the newly-weds!  The wedding was awesome and I'm glad to be part of the making of your cake!
